History & Purpose of AACP

The AACP (Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police) was originally formed in 1973 and reorganized in 1985 after a period of latency. The original purpose of the AACP was to provide the Municipal Police Chiefs of Alberta with the opportunity meet regularly to share emerging criminal trends, criminal intelligence, and discuss common concerns and solutions on any law enforcement related matter.
In 1985 the AACP agreed that the Active membership would be extended to include the Municipal Police Chiefs and the Commanding Officer of the RCM Police K-Division, Edmonton. In 1988, the AACP further extended membership to of First Nations Police Chief. In 1990, the AACP further extended membership to RCM Police Commissioned Officers in charge of Municipal Detachments across the Province. In the years that followed, membership was also extended to include the Chief of the Canadian National Railway Police and the Canadian Pacific Railway Police and to the area Provost Marshall of the Military Police for Land Forces, Western Area. Finally, in 2010 membership was also extended to include the Chief (Executive Director) of the Alberta Sheriffs and Security Operations.

As the AACP grew and organized, it was agreed that the AACP would continue as a not for profit society and committed to full Society status, filing a constitution and operational bylaws with the Province of Alberta. The ranks of the AACP continued to grow with the inclusion of Associate membership, Corporate Associate membership, and Honorary membership granted to Government Ministry personnel, who have a vested interest in the affairs and direction of Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice System in Alberta. Due to this collaboration, the AACP continues to enjoy a professional, and mutually beneficial, relationship with the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security, the Alberta Justice Minister, and other Provincial Ministries, Municipal Authorities and Industry Leaders.

The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police only exists today because of the intelligence lead vision of our predecessors, who sought to have a closer level of working relationship with all levels of law enforcement with the expressed goal of providing our constituents with safer communities in which to raise families.
